In the neighborhood: a friend of mine spent his entire hitch in the US MARINES in the Aleutian Islands. ¿What is the, “TASK AND PURPOSE/ lifestyle,” for this outpost?

As an American who’s from northeastern Minnesota, it’s odd watching things like this. There are plenty of us Yankees who are just as well adjusted to the cold as our Canadian brothers 😂✌🏻🇺🇸 🇨🇦

This is probably an example of the US Army closing the barn door after the horse got away. This is in the winter of 1950, what about the poor guys who froze their fingers, toes and other extremities off at Bastogne, Belgium in 1944? This is in 1950, is this happening at the same time American troops are fighting for their lives in snow and ice at Chosan, North Korea?

"military personnel scheduled for participation in norther exercise tend to become slovenly in their personal appearance and general housekeeping duties"
sounds like a standard field exercise to me, the dudes probably didn't want to pack 4 extra pairs of undershirts they weren't gonna use.

The Cold War was always coming – long before the end of the Second World War. I recommend 'The Good War' by Studs Terkel, an oral history of WW2, for insights into the social, political and racial mentalities on all sides of the war, from all kinds of people at all ranks.

Just finished this and the Civil war one. Next one on the series should be "The piggiest part of the Pig War" for the 1906-1909 conflict between Serbia and Austria.

I wonder if any of that training helped them develop tactics and gear for the korean war. Korea is cold in winter. Its about the same as chicago in winter.
