I've always said that originality is very overrated in music. The example I always use to illustrate this is that I could bring a monkey into the studio, set up a wall of plexiglass, throw 2 room mics behind that wall and record the monkey throwing his poop at it. It would be the most original recording ever made, but it would still sound like shit.

Authenticity, originality, 50 plus albums, yet I've never hear you mention Peter Hammill once.Probably one of the UK's national treasures. Johnny Lydon to David Bowie have all bowed to him. Time to educate your viewers.

I think the masses just haven’t had the proper exposure to more complex music; so, the simplistic stuff makes more money. Similarly, in the Midwest, most people can’t eat spicy food. It’s not the spice’s fault, it’s just that the people had no exposure to it growing up.

But I’m lucky to have people in my life that introduced me to the magical stuff, like my brother who is a guitarist, and a few other close friends who just love rock and metal and taught that appreciation to me, in a way.

You have to start somewhere. Most folks start with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and don’t make it much further because they are sad souls without the right listening opportunities. Yes, they should be mocked, but also pitied!

Originality: the skillful talent to evoke a familiar and pleasant feeling of appreciation for that talent, making what is old (musical, lyrical history and evolutions) seem surprising new…in the best sense of creativity. The object of Art is some new, aesthetic experience that originally, creatively informs and surprises and delights. Beauty is Pleasure. Truth is Beauty. That is all. Cheers!

I don’t believe it’s really possible nowadays to do anything ‘original’ when it comes to Rock or Pop music, however there have been tons of innovative developments in other genres – just the proliferation of different sub-genres of modern metal is proof of that, mostly to do with developments in music production and technology. Same with EDM etc. BUT – surely the POINT of rock is to strip out all that nonsense and get back to a ‘real’ live band sound, which is totally refreshing in the age of autotune and drum loops. For me, authenticity and emotional content, with great musical ability, is way more important than ‘originality’ ❤

So was that table with the microphone articulated boom arms already there? Or did they bring it in? Why would it already be there? Why wouldn't it? So many questions…. ….and i want answers…

Justin & Dan Hawkins have demonstrated originality and authenticity can be sustained long term while consistently being enthusiastically supported by a legion of devoted Darkness fans around the world.
The Darkness survive, even thrive, on the steam of their immense collective talent, creative drive and impassioned convictions backed up with 23+ years of unapologetic Rock.

editorial aside – The family is loving Justin's clean shaven face and wavy styled hair lifted off the forehead: handsome.
Please keep this look for awhile, kind sir! Your complexion is marvelous, your facial features pleasing. You, looking refreshed & full of vitality.
Yes, we want you to express yourself but some of us selfishly wish to view your handsome countenance free of stache & shadowy bristle….so that it may be captured in tour photos marking the new year. 🤘

I do I piss take type interpretation of you're beautiful, where the singer of the song is scared to sing the song and every time he sings beautiful he lets out a little shock/scream cos that word really scares him.

You will some idea of what I mean by scared of the song if you look for the snl skit of John Lithgow as a professor who is scared of a skeleton and, you will get some idea of what my rendition of you're beautiful might look like.
No? You don't think it's amusing. You philistines.
    It's funny to me.

"The guitar plays a couple of notes, the drummer hits a drum, the singer screams then goes into a dramatic monologue".

Throw in an organ and you have The Doors.

Justin and Jenny, would love for you to review Adrianne Lenker and/or her band Big Thief.
She strikes the perfect balance of familiarity and uniqueness, with sonics that stand alongside the likes of Radiohead, the melodic power of The Beatles or Elliott Smith and lyrics as strong as Leonard Cohen and Dylan.
    A true generational talent 🤍

There's a saying in engineering that 1 + 1 = 3. In other words, you take elements of two existing technologies and come up with something new. For example, the inventors of the mobile phone took elements of landline telephony, combined them with radio and came up with a radio network that's as easy to use as a telephone network. Good artists do that with their influences. They're not ENTIRELY original because they HAVE influences: but they ARE original because their product is not the same as that of their influences.

You don’t go from Beethoven to Metallica overnight. People can’t be this stupid 🤨 all musicians who are heard on a large enough scale contribute to the overall progression. It’s a slow process, plagiarism is one thing but this conversation is the equivalent of the ignorance that all Chinese people look the same.

The talk of authenticity got me thinking about Mark Lanegan records – my all time favourite (Field Songs) is probably the least original, (which is not to say he doesn't have his moments), but its the way he sings that just hits differently. Doesn't hurt that he's probably one of the finest lyricists to ever walk the earth, but the songs themselves are mostly dead simple.

Sorry, I’ve tried but I can’t stand her. She’s far too young to have a sensible answer to this. You (sorry) and me have been around long enough to attempt to justify her opinions. She may go on to explain why. I didn’t watch. Unless she argues about the social, historical and financial background to it, the arguments a dead duck. All popular music has these elements intertwined in it. But just ruling out something as she seems to do ‘ is no one’s gonna listen to it’ is outrageous. She has to go do huge research on the cycle of fashion music takes as in any other walk of life. No one thought ELP were listenable. etc etc. called underestimating your audience. Mind you with ‘experts’ like her controlling what we are forced to listen to no wonder it’s all shlt. She has limited capabilities in her field. That comes across unless she’s hiding behind the ‘devil’s advocate’ card. Ridiculous. Well I will not be back. Might watch you on your own.

some bands/musicians develope their own stile. they sound like no other. to name a few: violent femmes, jon spencer blues explosion, frank zappa, king gizzard and the lizard wizard. and some of them add something new to music.
other musicians copy the new quality and a new genre is born or second best, sub genre. mostly the founders of their own or a new stile/genre are seccessfull. sometimes with a delay. to name some : red hot chili peppers, velvet underground, joy division, miles davis, w.a. mozart….

originality creates success. copy/paist combination creates one hit wonders or bore out.
also if a band/musicion who once has created their own original style copy/paists themselves they start to loose something. not to name anyone…

Woahhh I feel like this applies in the art world as well- it’s so hard to be original because your audience will be so niche- but if you get real good at drawing dogs you stand a chance 😂

The satriani/ coldplay one was around his tune “if i could fly”. There are youtube vids layering one over the other and they are almost identical. I heard it was settled out of court and to this day Satriani refuses to talk about it, so I suspect an NDA (non disclosure agreement) was part of the settlement

I think that a) ever has it been thus. Creativity and innovation has always moved in mysterious ways. Seemingly nothing for ages and then great spurts of Something New, and b) Something New requires lots of empty space, lots of quiet, and lots of time, lots of introspection, and lots of paying attention. Our world is stewing in perpetual intrusions into all of those and our Creatives are not exceptions to that reality. If our artists and innovators and creatives are not sequestering themselves from the incessant noise of the modern world, I don’t know that we can reasonably expect much that is New. And it’s always a dance, isn’t it? Between the musician and the receivers of their music. The Overton Window of music is such that a New Sound can just be too discordant and incoherent for an audience, and musicians are also audiences … so if they are not hearing Something New and being challenged in that way, how likely are they to themselves respond with Also Something New? We live in such a bizarre time. It would appear as though we have a kind of Hyper Novelty with New Things coming at us non stop, but they aren’t new at all, are they? They’re just derivative iterations of the same thing with a lot of human psychology backed engineering to the Influencing to make us want the thing even though we already have it. We have whiplash and we are dazed and numbed, but we do not have true novelty. It’s very odd. But ya, I think an audience and a musician create a kind of electrical circuit and they require one another to be attuned to the same frequency to close that circuit and generate Movement. We have a dearth of both, I think. And I think perpetual distraction, too much noise in the head is largely to blame. We can’t attend properly like we used to when we had the space and time to mull a New thing over and decide if it was actually brilliant or if it was just incoherent noise. Something like that, maybe ….

Considering the thrust of this convo, I was waiting for you to mention Greta van Fleet. Glad to hear your thoughts on them, and that they mirror mine. Yes, they sounded Zeppelin-esque when they started, but not at all anymore. People who continue to say that haven’t heard their last couple albums. Or went into those albums expecting Zeppelin, so that’s what they heard. I don’t hear it at all anymore. Now I recognize their songs immediately as GVF. And Josh Kiszka is an amazing vocalist.
